Floor Mats for Three-Row SUVs and Minivans: What to Check Before You Order

Three-row SUVs and minivans carry the most people, so they get the dirtiest floors. They are also the hardest vehicles to fit mats for, because the same model can have several different floor layouts. Here is what to check before you order, so the set arrives right the first time.

1. Count your rows, and know which ones you actually use

It sounds obvious, but it is the most common source of confusion:

• Some SUVs have a standard third row in every trim.
• Others offer it as an option, so two cars with the same name can have two rows or three.
• In many families the third row is folded down most of the time and used as cargo space.

If you rarely use the third row, you may only need the first two rows plus a cargo liner. If the kids ride back there every day, the third-row floor gets as dirty as the others.

2. Bench or captain's chairs?

Many three-row vehicles are sold with either a second-row bench (usually 8 seats) or two captain's chairs (usually 7 seats) with a walkway between them.

That changes the second-row floor. With captain's chairs there is an open aisle to the third row, and the mat layout for that row is different from a bench layout. Always tell your mat maker which one you have.

3. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid or gas?

Hybrids put their battery somewhere, and on some models that affects the floor or the cargo area. The shape of the cargo floor, the height of the load floor and the underfloor storage can differ from the gas version of the same model. Mention the powertrain when you order.

4. Model year and generation

Three-row vehicles are redesigned every several years, and each generation has its own floor shape. A mat for a 2019 model may not fit the 2023 redesign. Order by the exact year.

5. Minivans: sliding and removable seats

Minivan second-row seats often slide far forward and back, and on some models they can be removed. A mat must not interfere with the seat tracks. A mat cut for your specific van stays clear of the rails. A universal mat often lies across them.

6. Don't forget the cargo area

Behind the third row, the cargo well in a three-row vehicle is deep and collects sports gear, groceries and strollers. With the third row folded it becomes a large load floor. A washable cargo liner protects it either way.
